Everything you Need to Know about Lamps

Filed under: Online Home Improvement — @ 10:42 pm

Lighting can be one of the most confusing issues when making your house into a home. Finding the perfect lamp for needs is easiest when you know a little something about the types of lamps available. It is also helpful to know what they are generally used for. With this information you can chose the proper lamp to meet your needs.

The types of lamps vary and new ideas are being introduced everyday. There are still some basic lamps that almost everyone needs at one point or the other. Accent lamps are used to add extra lighting to a room. Table lamps are good if you have somewhere to set them and they are used for general lighting needs. Desk lamps are usually small and used to light a specific area. Floor lamps, like table lamps, are used for general lighting but are taller and set on the floor. Wall lamps are great fro limited space and are used for general lighting. These are the basic types of lamps and you will find that most lamps fit into one of these categories.

There are some special types of lighting that can make a lamp more suitable to your needs. Three way lamps provide three different levels of light from one lamp. To have a three way lamp you will need a special switch and bulb for that specific purpose. General lighting gives gentle light throughout the whole room. Task lighting is lighting that focuses on one area for a specific purpose. Protective lighting is used to prevent accidents or deter crime. These are just a sample of different types of lighting.

The last step in buying a lamp is choosing the shade. There are no hard fast rules, but there are some general rules about choosing the correct lamp shade for your lamp. The shade should be the height of the distance from the base to the bulb. It should be as wide as the widest part of the lamp or wider. The bottom of the shade should cove the socket. Lamp shades come in many different styles and some use the shade to express their style.

Choosing lighting for your home shouldn’t become a headache. Now that you know the basics about lamps you can easily chose the right one for your needs.

Building Materials

Filed under: Online Home Improvement — @ 10:47 pm

Building materials consist of lumber, steel, concrete, etc. A large part of the cost of construction is due to the building materials used. That’s why it is important to find good building material distributors. Costs of building materials vary between different vendors and so does their quality. Negotiations on rates will reduce the overall construction cost by a huge amount.
It becomes imperative to double-check the correct amount of building materials that would be needed for construction before embarking on the project. This would ensure that one is not left with unused material once the construction is complete. It also becomes easier to negotiate prices when one has a clear picture of the correct amount of materials needed.
Materials for building must be purchased for their performance rather than looks. While buying stone, brick, concrete and other such fundamental building blocks, it is the rigidity and tenacity that matters and not just their aesthetics. It is wise to know well in advance what purpose the construction will offer before zeroing in on a particular construction block.
There has been a wide range of building materials used over the ages. Almost every moldable and adherent substance has been used at one point of time or the other as a building tool. People have used substances like mud, metal, even plastic and glass to craft building structures. Nowadays, steel and glass are much in vogue for office buildings, while brick still remains the popular choice for residences.
Apart from the basic construction material, there is requirement of cement, concrete, limestone, sand and other adhesive and protective materials. Again these materials should be selected for their efficiency. New materials with modifications are continually thronging the market.
One important factor in the availability of building material is the location. Locally available materials are cheaper and more easily found than materials imported from foreign places.
Ancient structures are still built with traditional materials like wood and stone as in Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian homes. People in the tropical rainforests of Africa use anything from animal hide to tree leaves to construct their tent settlements called yurts, while the Eskimos are famous for building their igloos entirely of ice blocks. Wood is considered by many people even today for its tremendous visual appeal. It can be acclimatized to any type of environment and can be made pest-resistant and water-resistant. It can be made to be highly tenacious and flexible. Compressed wood is known to be very strong.
In recent times, green building materials have gained a reputation for being highly environmentally friendly. These materials are composed of renewable materials, and hence they can get degraded in the environment and do not pose an ecological threat. However, the use of green building materials is still a developing field as of now.

So You Think You Want to Build a Steel House?

Filed under: Online Home Improvement — @ 11:53 am

If you are building a new home and you want it to be durable, unique, interesting and supremely livable, you might want to consider STEEL!

The concept of a steel house probably seems strange to most people, but in fact, it is a growing trend, especially in countries like India, and it should not be dismissed out of hand. There are a lot of benefits to a steel house, not the least of which is weather resistance.

In some communities in the United States condominium and townhouse association halls, and new health care facilities are being designed with steel, and the concept of residential steel buildings and homes is being tested here in the U.S. with good results.

Architects working on steel home designs say that the idea may seem radical, but it is no different than living in a house made of concrete.
You may not be able to hang a picture any place you want or drive a nail into the wall without some thought and planning, but you can decorate a steel home. You just need to limit your wall hangings to the spot where the steel support beams run behind the wallboard.

You might think that the temperature inside a steel house would be very high during hot summer months, but that is not the case. Studies of steel houses built in India revealed that, on average, the steel house was one degree cooler in summer than a concrete home.

The chief architect of these Indian steel homes says that is because steel walls are smoother than concrete and reflect more light, and because many of the materials he uses in designing the steel structure have an aluminum coating that increases reflective capacity.

Furthermore, steel sheets are thin so there is less heat conductive surface. Materials used to insulate the steel home, and the glazing on the windows all help to keep the temperature down inside the steel house. Windows in a steel home are typically large and designed for optimum cross ventilation.

Architectural design always includes an appropriate roof pitch to reduce solar heat in the room and accommodate the angle at which the sun enters the room each day.

A year ago, an international architectural competition spurred interest in steel houses, designed to be usable, and sustainable in any environment. The winning designs will be sold to builders and property owners who want steel houses, but don’t know how to design them and what factors should be considered.

The fact is that steel houses compare very favorably to those built with concrete because the steel ’strength to weight bearing’ ratio is higher than any other material, and because it is easy to form and join steel components.

And, because the materials for a steel house are ordered to specification, the house is built from measured, custom pieces that require less on site preparation, thereby reducing dust and noise and speeding the construction process, and decreasing the total time for construction.

A steel structure uses materials that are sturdy, and light, and thus easy to use in construction. And, these materials can withstand hurricanes, storms and earthquakes, better than any other building material. Steel houses do not require annual maintenance, or regular painting to keep them looking fresh and new.

The cost of constructing a steel house or building is slightly higher than the cost for a concrete building, but costs can vary widely depending on the use of the building, and the quality of finish materials you want to use in the steel structure.

It might take awhile for U.S. home builders and architects to fully embrace the idea of steel houses but the trend has started! Some architects are designing roof structures with steel and using steel as a complementary and holistic component of the home exterior.

Commercial architects are also designing with steel for health care facilities, schools and other institutional buildings.

But the real cutting edge of steel structures is in residential home design and building. The questions is: Do you want to be the first on your block to build a steel house?

Installing a Bathroom Vanity and Countertop

Filed under: Online Home Improvement — @ 8:35 am

The installation of a new bathroom vanity and countertop can transform an outdated bathroom into a contemporary one. Installing a vanity and countertop is simple to do and can be purchased from any home improvement store for less than $500.

Remove the old Vanity and Countertop

First turn off the water supplies under the vanity. Next disconnect the supply lines at the valves. Then disconnect the drain pipe at the trap (the j-shaped section underneath the vanity).
Next remove the corner screws that are securing the top of the old vanity to the countertop. The countertop should then be able to be lifted off of the old vanity.

After the countertop has been separated from the vanity, remove the faucet hardware if you plan on reusing the existing faucet. Make sure, however, when purchasing your new vanity countertop that it will support the faucet configuration (one hole or three holes - and the number of inches between the holes - center to center).

After the countertop and faucet have been removed from the work area, unscrew the back and/or side screws that hold the vanity to the wall(s). Then remove the vanity from the bathroom.

Installing the new Vanity and Countertop

Slide the new vanity into the location where the previous vanity resided. Note: you will probably need to remove/cut away a portion of the back of the new vanity to allow the supply lines and drainage pipe to slide through. A jig saw works fine for this effort. Just make a couple of pilot holes with a drill and then use the jig saw to cut out the appropriate area.

Once the vanity is in position, you will need to square it up with the back or side walls and make sure it sits level. If there are imperfections in the walls when attempting to square it up (e.g. the walls are not straight), you can either scribe the vanity or use a small piece of trim to hide any imperfections. Scribing involves using a compass and cutting/shaving away a strip of the vanity edge such that the entire length of the cabinet edge sits evenly against the wall.

In order to level the vanity, shims may be necessary to temporarily hold the vanity in place. Make sure the vanity is level back to front and side to side. Then, using screws fasten the vanity to the walls. Make sure the screws are securely fastened to studs behind the sheetrock.

Once the vanity has been secured, it is now time to tackle the new countertop.

It is best to mount the faucet assembly to the countertop before placing the countertop onto the vanity. Once the faucet/supply lines and drain pipe have been installed to the countertop you are ready to place the countertop onto the vanity. However, it is best to lay a bead of Liquid Nails (caulk adhesive) along the top of the vanity first. This will help to ensure that the countertop remains securely fastened to the vanity. In some cases, this may be all that is necessary or desired for securing the countertop to the vanity.

Place the countertop on top of the vanity making sure it sits square. Use screws to secure the vanity to the countertop. Usually there are corner blocks on the vanity to secure the screws to the countertop. Make sure, however, that you use screws that will not penetrate through the top of the vanity.

Finally connect the supply line feeds (dangling down from the faucet) to the copper supply lines. Then connect the drain pipe of the bowl/sink to the J-Trap drainage pipe.

Turn on the hot/cold water supply line valves and you are done.

Is Passive Solar A Viable Home Heating Option In Cold Areas?

Filed under: Online Home Improvement — @ 10:09 pm

Passive solar is a method of using the energy from the sun to heat a home. It is extremely popular because the process is free once a passive solar home is created.

Passive solar can be used to heat a home in colder areas, but you have to go into it with reasonable expectations. While the cold climate is a hurdle, the real issue is going to be the length of time the sun beats down upon your property. If your home receives only four or five hours of direct sunlight a day, forget it. You will never produce enough energy to keep the home warm for sufficient periods of time.

Passive solar design is very popular in warm to mild climates because it is more or less a free method for warming a home. The manipulation of the position of the home and placement of large windows in the south facing wall is typical strategies for dealing with the issue. Obviously, large windows in a cold climate are going to result in significant heat loss regardless of the quality with which they are built. So, what can you do?

There are two primary approaches to creating a passive solar design that works in the winter. One is the use of a large Trombe Wall and the other is the greenhouse approach. Let’s take a look.

Trombe Walls are popular in passive solar designs because they effectively convert sunlight to heat and are interesting from an aesthetic view point. Typically, a Trombe Wall is 8 to 12 feet in length on the south facing wall of a home. In significantly colder areas, the wall is going to need to be much larger, perhaps the full length of the home depending upon energy analysis and the cold weather expected. An energy audit of the home is the only to arrive at a definitive answer.

You are also going to have to incorporate a flip strategy for the heat. As the sun enters the glass plate and heats up the masonry of the wall, you risk losing vast amounts of it through the glass surface. This means you need to create an air circulation method whereby you draw the hot air into a secondary space behind the wall. This can simply be a closed off room or a space intended for the purpose. The circulation should be done on a timer similar to the solar thermostats used on solar hot water panels. The point is to keep the built up heat from escaping back into the environment.

The greenhouse approach simplifies matters. The essential idea is to build an insulated greenhouse to collect and store the heat of the sun during the day. Often called a sunspace, the greenhouse is similar to those used for plants. Even in cold climates, the sun will produce a magnificent amount of heat. Again, the problem is keeping the heat from escaping once it has built up. Since the sun has to come in through a transparent surface, you inevitably have the problem of the heat escaping through the same. The best option is to use a controlled timer to blow the air through to the house once certain temperatures are reached. It is not very efficient, but you have little choice.

An alternative to passive solar heating in very cold areas is biomass. Corn burning furnaces are popular. They are a much cheaper solution as are the corn kernels. This biomass energy is also much more reliable and, personally, it is the way I would go.

The Top Five Do It Yourself Home-improvement Tips

Filed under: Online Home Improvement — @ 1:38 pm

Tackling home-improvement projects that need to be done can be both exciting and rewarding. But going at it the wrong way can be a big disappointment and a source of a lot of stress. The best success is had when you plan ahead well and you pick the right time for doing the project. Here are some very important do it yourself home improvement tips to help every project be a success.

1. Almost any interior home-improvement project is going to make a mess, and that means that your home will be in disarray while the project is going on. For many, this is the most frustrating part of the entire project. So if you know that a particular room or area of the house is going to need some repairs, why not plan in advance and try to accomplish as much as you can in that area at one time?

If you don’t want dirt and debris flying all over your furniture in that area you will need to prepare your home in advance, usually by covering them with bedsheets or plastic sheeting. So it’s much easier to do this in one entire section of the house at a time, instead of having to recover everything over and over again.

2. Even if you plan on doing all the work yourself, it’s always a good idea to have the phone numbers of local professionals available in case you run into a major problem. When remodeling, there is just no telling what kind of problems you may encounter. Some of it you may be able to handle on your own, and some you may not. Butt having the phone numbers of experts in that field handy can keep the project moving forward even when difficult situations are encountered.

3. If you have a family, keep in mind that small children and power tools just don’t mix. Of course, they will probably want to be with you and maybe even join in and help you. But for safety’s sake, be sure to keep them completely away from any power tools or equipment that could cause harm.

4. It doesn’t matter what project you get involved in, or how organized you are in planning it, you are always going to find something that you need right away in order to finish. It’s just Murphy’s Law. So try not to start any major remodeling projects at a time when supply stores and tool rental shops are not open. When you need something for the project, and you definitely will, it’s a real relief to be able to just run down and get it right away without causing much work delay.

5. If you have to work around any of the home appliances or electrical and plumbing, be sure that you know for certain where and how to turn off all of the water, gas and electricity services to your home. If an emergency situation arises, you don’t want to have to find the shutoffs at the last minute.

Although improving your home can be a lot of fun, you need to be smart about how you do it as well. Following the tips given above should at least help you get your home improvement projects off to the right start.

Choosing And Cleaning Shower Curtains

Filed under: Online Home Improvement — @ 8:42 pm

Shower curtains are often the focal point of a bathroom. A wide variety of fabric, pattern and styles are available to compliment the design of your bathroom or home. These range from simple, elegant designs to unique and unusual colors and patterns. Replacing the curtain is the easiest and cheapest way to redecorate your bathroom. Choose your material and then select matching accessories to match the bathroom and furniture.

Selecting Shower Curtains

The choices in a curtain for the shower are abundant. You can find prints from traditional or contemporary styles and everything in between. Once you have chosen the fabric, you can select the rod and curtain rings. These help determine the overall look of the room and are inexpensive.

The most common materials used are waterproof surfaces. These include nylon, vinyl or PVC coated materials. These are best because they are waterproof, which is important in the shower. If you find a great curtain that isn’t waterproof, you could use a vinyl liner with your fancy outer curtain. This will give you the look you want with the waterproof protection you need.

Making Your Own Shower Curtains

If you have trouble finding the style you want, you could make your own. This is an easy job for anyone with even rudimentary sewing skills. Your local sewing store has a wide selection of materials. If you find a great fabric that isn’t waterproof, you can always purchase a liner. These are very inexpensive and are available in most stores that sell bathroom accessories.

Cleaning Shower Curtains

Mold is a problem all over the bathroom, and the shower curtain is no exception. Mold thrives in warm, damp environments, such as your shower. The mold can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. In addition, bacteria can grow on a dirty shower curtain. This can be dangerous for people with respiratory problems, young children or the elderly. Keeping your curtain clean is the best way to prevent illness.

Clean your shower curtain with a cleaning solution that is made to kill mold. Most materials used in curtains can’t be put in the washing machine. Check the cleaning instructions that came with your curtain. If it can be machine washed, use hot water and a little bleach to kill mold and germs. Another option is to wash the curtain and apply lemon juice. Set the curtain outside in the sun. The sun reacts with the lemon juice to kill mold.

Once you have removed the mold, it’s important to prevent it from coming back. Here are some things you can do to keep the mold away.

Make sure your bathroom is well ventilated. Use the vent when you shower. If you don’t have a vent, consider having one installed.

If you don’t have a vent, open the bathroom window. This isn’t as effective as a vent, but will help.

After washing your curtain, soak it in salt water before drying. The salt water will help prevent future mold growth.

Home Improvement - Leaks, Moisture, Interior Designing

Filed under: Online Home Improvement — @ 4:48 am

Fill in those cracks and holes before deterioration sets in and
your equity on the home drops. To get you started we are going
to go over the steps for stopping leaks by filling in cracks in
the walls and/or holes.

First, you will need to purchase a bit of “gray-tinted latex
masonry caulk.” You could also use waterproof masonry sealer to
protect the walls. You will need tools to get the job done,
since I am sure you do not want to use your fingers. The tools
needed will include hand vacuum to clean up your mess once you
are done and throughout the process. You will need chisels,
caulk guns, wired brush, trowel and/or a knife will cut it, and
that about sums it up.

You may need a piece of “fiberglass insulation” to fill in any
holes that are deeper than an inch. You can tuck-point smaller
holes in the mortar joints of the walls providing the walls are
brick, stone or concrete. Clean the area for filling with the
wired brush and utilize your hand vacuum to remove any particles
from the area.

You will need ‘latex bonding liquids” to coat the edge of the
holes in the wall before filling in the cracks or holes. You
will also need “concrete patcher” since after you apply the
bonding liquid you will need this to fill in the holes in the
wall. Using either the trowel or knife, you will need to smooth
out the concrete patcher for a natural effect.

Repairing your home will increase the equity value. Thus when
you take the time to repair or improve your home, you are
preserving the equity or increasing the equity which makes all
the difference in the world when you consider selling your home,
or applying for additional loans against the equity of the home.

If you need to install gutters or drains, the process is also
simple. You will need one half inch masonry bits and drill,
hacksaw, metal scraper, and a caulk gun to get started. As far
as materials, for gutter or drain repairs you will need butt
joint connectors, adhesive, corner connectors, baseboard gutter
section, and one half inch blocks of wood?

Once you have the materials and tools together pull out those
working hands and start the process of repairing your home. If
the area for repair is in the basement of the home, you will
need the gutter and drains to repair the problem. It is
important to achieve a perimeter of the area for guttering and
draining. Thus, leaving openings around the drains is essential
for the best effects.

Using the drill, you will need to relieve the any hydrostatic
pressures from the wall. It is important to keep the drill holes
at least one foot apart. Remove any old paint, stains, or other
particulars from the area before continue work. You can use the
scrapers to get the cleaning done.

When preparing gutters use the walls to find the length, since
using the actual area for fitting is best over rulers or gauges.

When you make purchases of materials and tools are sure to read
all the instructions, giving to you by the manufacturer to learn
additional steps in putting up gutters and drains in the home.
Make sure to apply the adhesive at the baseline of the gutters
before installing.

When applying the gutters make sure they fit against the wall
and keep the gutters one quarter of an inch away from the base.
At the corners of the gutter, apply additional adhesive for firm
sticking.

Finally, you will need to install the butt joint connectors
before putting up the corner gutters. Put adhesive at the area
of the gutters that go in the corner, especially around the
corner areas. Finally, you will install the drains. Again
following the instructions provided to you by the manufacturer
for the best job.

Fixing leaks, drains and gutters is relatively easy work. The
hardest part of any improvement or repair in homes is cleaning
the areas, and sometimes dealing with fixtures or other problem
areas.
