Everyone sits or stands roughly in a circle around the pile of presents. Ready slips of paper equal to the total of presents with clearly written numbers. Be sure to distinguish six from nine, one from seven. Every participating invitee draws a number and carries onto that slip of paper. On the starting go, the guest with paper slip #1 picks out a gift, opens it, and all admire it. On the next round, the guest with paper slip #2 gets the choice of “stealing” any unwrapped present (#1’s) or selecting a wrapped one. If #2 bargains #1’s gift, then #1 must open a wrapped gift. On the third turn, the guest with paper slip #3 gets the choice of “stealing” any unwrapped present (#1’s or #2’s) or choosing a wrapped one. If a gift is swiped from you, you can steal a gift, or open a wrapped one.
Rules about “stealing:” A gift cannot be instantly taken back from the guest who just took it.
The turn carries on until a wrapped gift is selected thus the thieving stops. The fourth “owner” of a gift gets to keep it. The gift is “dead” after it has been taken three times. “Owners” of “live” gifts must keep them visible and hold them up when invited. The present exchange ends when the last wrapped present is opened. Usually, invitees are encouraged to perpetuate the present stealing as long as there are “live” presents, but no one is indebted to do this.
