The Bad Credit Card That May Do Good.

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 9:23 pm

Millions of people use credit cards all around the world. A huge chunk of those users made mistakes when dealing with their credit cards. The consequence of the errors is costly.

A lot end up in debt and most of the time these are the people who rant about the credit card being the devil. But fact of the matter is, this is not the case. When used properly, credit cards are very good financial tools.

Credit cards are not necessarily just for people who have large sums of money to use. There are some cards even for the financially challenged, and these are called the: “Bad Credit Cards.”

A bad credit card is just precisely that: a card with a very bad or low credit limit.

There are two types of credit cards: there is the secured and the unsecured credit cards.

Unsecured credit cards are the accounts that are free from the limits of a bank account. The limit of credit is up to the bank’s discretion and not up to the size of the bank account. If the bank thinks that a person is deserving of a bigger credit, then it will be given.

This is the usual type of credit cards in the market and is fairly popular among the card shopping people. These are also the cards known to be more respected by other companies. These are also the cards known to send people to a very deep debt.

This is the type of credit card that should be avoided if the applicant is already in a financial mess.

The secured credit cards are the bad credit cards. These cards are grounded on the size of the account a person has. For example, if a person has a $1,000 balance, then that is all the credit a person is going to get. If there is a point where the balance reaches $0, then the person should go and “re-fill” the account.

The bank limits the credit to the money already present to avoid overspending, thus preventing even deeper debt. This will monitor the expenses of the person and will help the development of a financial recovery for some.

These credit cards are also known as “pre-paid credit cards” for there is only a fixed amount that can be used and the holder is the one who puts it there.

The Easy Way To Build A Great Credit Report

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 8:58 pm

The most important thing you can do when building credit is to always pay your bills on time and to never borrow more than you can afford to pay back. It sounds silly for me to say, but unfortunately people do this every day. Credit is enticing and it very easy to get in over your head. Beware because those “no money down” and pre-approved credit card offers can send us straight down the credit road of darkness! It’s essential when building a healthy credit report that you remember your long term goals, and resist the temptation of buying yet another thing on credit.

Today, it’s more important than ever to have a good credit rating. Don’t get me wrong it has always been important to have good credit if you want to buy a car, a house, rent an apartment, or be approved for personal loans or credit cards. However, today more and more employers are looking at credit reports as part of background checks, and insurance companies are considering them when deciding whether or not to extend coverage.

Having good credit means you have established credit, which stated simply means that you have borrowed money or used a credit card and then re-paid it in a timely manner and not extended your credit limits. Don’t be fooled into thinking no credit is good credit. It’s just that “no credit” which means you have no established track record. (good or bad) Additionally, it means not overextending yourself and applying for credit that you won’t be able to pay back. One little tip; don’t “shop” for credit because every time you apply for a credit card it shows the action as an inquiry on your report. Too many of those make you look like a high risk to other lenders!

As a young adult, using a cellular phone and paying your bills on time is a good way to start building a good credit report. In addition, there are many special credit card offers for students and young adults specifically designed to get a credit history started, and using the card and paying it on time is one of the best ways to establish excellent credit. Paying more than the minimum payment, or even paying the full balance, is also a very good idea.

An excellent way to build strong credit is with a car loan. Most cars aren’t cheap, so by having a large balance and then paying it on time every month will do wonders for your credit. You’ll need to establish sufficient credit in order to be able to borrow money and finance the car, but making other payments on time - such as the ones mentioned above - and being gainfully employed will allow you to do so.

Now that we have you buying things and spending money, it’s time to monitor your credit and make sure all is well. Request a copy of your credit report once a year, from each credit bureau. It’s important to know which of your accounts show up on which reports, and to make sure that they are all accurate. It’s fine to increase spending and credit as long you don’t overextend, and make sure to cancel any card you are not using immediately. If you find mistakes on your credit report, make sure to follow the bureau’s instructions to challenge it, in writing. If you follow these steps, you can get your credit rating up to an AAA status and keep it there.

Avoiding Credit Card Traps

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 8:01 am

The next time you open your credit card statement, take a closer look at the small insert titled “changes to your credit card agreement”. You know the one I’m speaking about. It’s that small, folded paper written in legalese that you promise to read some other time (but of course that time never comes) or you just discard it with the other “junk” inserts.

First and foremost you must understand that using your credit card after you’ve received this notification results in your automatic “agreement” to the new terms in the notice. To prevent these new terms from affecting your account you must stop using that credit card immediately or by the date given in the notification statement.

The most common modifications to credit card agreements include new APR’s (annual percentage rates), new fees and/or changes to existing fees, or a change to the grace period on your account. The grace period is the number of days during which any credit used for purchases may be repaid in full without incurring a finance charge.

Not knowing or not keeping track of the dollar amount limit on your card is another trap you should avoid. Credit card issuers will allow you to charge a small amount over the limit set on your account. However, don’t be surprised when you get hit with an “over limit fee”, usually around $35.00 or higher, on your next statement. Also, be prepared for your APR to be increased if you go over your credit limit.

You’ll also trigger an increase to your interest rate if you miss your payment due date. Some companies consider your payment late if not received by noon or 1 p.m. on the date due. Along with the higher rate, you’ll also pay a “late fee” of $29 on up. Be sure to use the company’s preprinted envelope when sending your payment. These envelopes allow the pre-printed bar code to be scanned by the post office so that it can be delivered more efficiently.

If you’ve counted on those few extra days from the time you mail your check and the time the check clears your bank, beware! Many credit card issuers have switched from the traditional method of processing checks to a new electronic process. This new system shaves off a day or more from the traditional method it normally takes for your check to clear by electronically debiting your account.

If you’re considering paying your credit card bills online, check to see if any additional fees will be charged for using this type of payment. I recently received an e-mail message from one of my credit card companies announcing how easy it would be to make my payments online. Included in fine print at the bottom of the e-mail was this note - “A fee of up to $14.95 may be charged for this service and will be deducted from your checking account”. Hmmm, spend 37 cents on postage and mail my payment five days before the due date or pay now and get charged an additional $14.95 fee? I’ll bet you can guess which choice I made.

Taking the time to carefully read and understand your credit card agreement now will help you save money by avoiding unnecessary fees or climbing interest rates later down the road.

Free Credit Reports For You

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 9:53 pm

American consumers are now entitled to receive one free copy of their credit report per year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union are now all required by law to furnish to you a copy of your credit report. This is good news for consumers; please read on for additional helpful information.

As of September 1, 2005, the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that the three national credit reporting agencies provide one free copy of your credit report to you annually. You do not need to contact the three reporting agencies separately to obtain your reports, instead you can order them online at www.annualcreditreport.com; or by calling 877-322-8228; or by completing the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mailing it in.

The mailing address is:

Annual Credit Report Request Service

P.O. Box 105281

Atlanta, GA 30348-5281

The online form is available here: www.ftc.gov/credit.

If you need copies more often, you can contact the three reporting agencies and request copies directly from them. You will be charged for any reports over and beyond your one free annual report.

To purchase a copy of your report, contact:

Equifax

800-685-1111

www.equifax.com

Experian

888-EXPERIAN (888-397-3742)

www.experian.com

Trans Union

800-916-8800

www.transunion.com

What is the best way for you to benefit from the new law? That’s easy: order copies of your reports from the companies on a four month rotating basis. Most consumers will find this method to be adequate as it will allow for you to compare reports from each agency. Naturally, if you already suspect fraud you will want to order all three reports at once and notify each agency to place a “fraud alert” in your credit file.

There are also several private companies who will get a hold of all three copies of your credit report for you as well. There are fees involved, but you may find their services to be less of a hassle than contacting the three companies separately.

In summation, the new law is a bonus for consumers. Published reports indicate that many credit reports contain errors in them; this law gives you the opportunity to correct “their” mistakes by setting the record straight and at no cost to you.

Why Pay For Credit Repair Services - Do It Yourself

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 7:49 pm

Advertisements for credit repair services are everywhere, but what do you get when you purchase one of these services. Actually you get very little and possibly nothing because according to consumer reports many of these offers are scams. Many credit repair services charge you money to give you ideas about how you can repair the credit yourself. It is impossible for a company to repair your bad credit. That is something you have to do for yourself.

A credit repair company advertises that it will clear up all your bad credit problems and make it easier for you to get a loan for a car or a credit card. Many of these companies charge you hundreds of dollars, which you can use to pay your monthly bills and so nothing for you. You can provide you own credit repair services by starting with a request for your credit report. This is free, whether you make the request online or from one of the credit reporting agencies. You are entitled to one free report per year.

When you want to use credit repair services, you can avail of a debt reduction loan from your bank. Lenders are quite eager to help you in this regard because they know that you are making a conscientious effort to repair your bad credit. You might need to sit down with a counsellor to determine the amount of money you need to borrow. The lender will pay off your creditors leaving you with a manageable monthly payment, which more than likely is less than the total you currently have.

You need to be wary about paying any money to credit repair companies that want you to pay upfront before receiving any credit repair services. If you do contact a credit repair company, you need to make sure the person you speak with tells you what you can do on your own for free. If you do not receive this information from the company, then you should run as fast as possible.

If a credit repair company advises you to dispute the information regarding your credit history and you follow this advice, then you could be committing fraud. It is important for you to review your credit report to make sure that all the information is correct. There have been cases where some of the information is incorrect, but the chances of all of it being in need of dispute are highly unlikely.

No credit repair services can remove any unfavourable items from your credit report. What you need to do is start working on paying your bills on time or making arrangements with your creditors to take smaller amounts. All of this reflects favourably on your credit report, but no matter what credit repair services you use, the only way items can be removed is if you can prove they are incorrect. Your credit history is very important and you need to protect it.

Looking for credit repair services? Be careful.

Lower Your Credit Card APR

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 5:52 pm

APR often matters the most while deciding for a credit card. It is a common (and correct) notion that credit cards with additional benefits invariably have high APRs. This is true for almost every credit card company that exists.

You may be having a credit card that has a high APR but offers you certain irresistible benefits and advantages. It may have some membership benefits that you have become so accustomed to. There can be innumerable benefits for you, but you may realize after a certain point of time that you are paying a high APR for your credit card than the other credit cards in the market. This can be a puzzling position to be in, as you do not want to lose the benefits that you are availing because of the credit card and you also do not want to pay a high APR. In this situation, is there any way to lower your APR? Well, here we discuss the possible manner of doing so.

Let us assume that you have a good credit history. In this scenario, you will surely receive lots of mails and letters informing you of various new offers and schemes. Your mailbox would invariably be filled with unsolicited letters and mails from credit card companies. Your natural instinct would obviously be to tear and throw it in the dustbin but that is not the way to do it. Check out these brochures and compare the services and APR with your credit card company. You can also check web sites and other sources for comparison between various credit card companies. Once you have done a detailed research of the credit card market, give a call to your credit card company and tell them that you got a better offer, in terms of APR and benefits, from another credit card company. It is highly probable that the executive receiving your call would try to convince you. In such a case, make sure that you talk to the supervisor who would be handling the operations. Then pass on the message that you have received a better offer from another company (probably a competitor). The supervisor may ask you to wait for some more time as there are better schemes around the corner. You have to be adamant and tell that you cannot wait. In most of the circumstances, the supervisor would cut down the APR by around 50%. Even if this happens for a period of six months, you have surely saved some money.

No problem, you can repeat the same strategy after a period of six months, unless you really get a better offer!

The Truth About Low Interest Credit Cards

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 4:39 pm

Low interest credit cards are wonderful if you can get your hands on one. They offer great rates so it is easier to pay off your balance in a timely manner. These cards are perfect for those making large purchases on their credit cards, or even those that use their card for everyday purchases. If you are researching low interest credit cards, consider these factors during your search.

Credit Score

To qualify for low interest credit cards, you have to have great credit. There are several scores that fall in the “excellent credit” and in the “good credit” groups in terms of the credit bureaus. If your credit score falls into either of these groups, you will most likely qualify. However, if your score does not fall into these groups, you will most likely not be able to get any low interest credit cards. These cards are for the lowest risk cardholders, which are those with nearly flawless credit score.

Common Rates

For those that do qualify, low interest credit cards offer great rates. The most common rates fall between 9% and 15%. These cards are great when you need to make large purchases, because although your balance may be high, you will not be charged as much interest on it as a normal credit
card would charge. The lower rate you can find the better. So, be sure to shop around before committing to a card.

Introductory Offers

Low interest rate credit cards offer some of the best introductory offers out there. Many of the low interest rate credit cards offer over a year with no APR. This is an amazing opportunity for cardholders to charge without any fees attached. Card companies know that people who own these cards usually keep paying off the balance, even without being charged APR, so it is still profitable for them to offer this plan.

Fees

Very rarely are there ever annual or enrollment fees on low interest credit cards. These are the top of the line credit cards. Therefore, to charge unnecessary fees would deter cardholders from applying. If you do run across a card that charges an annual or enrollment fee and you have
perfect credit, you need to look elsewhere for your card. Those with great credit should never pay these fees, for they are intended for high risk cardholders with bad credit.

Low interest credit cards can be extremely helpful when it comes to your credit card finances. The less amount of interest you have to pay, the better off your finances are in the long run. Be sure to research your low interest credit card choices before applying. Some cards may give you
the low interest rate for the first few months and then raise it dramatically. As long as you are informed about your credit card, you can make wise decisions.

Cash Back Credit Card: Earn While You Spend!

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 11:25 pm

Cash back credit cards are an excellent way to earn money while you spend! Instead of making purchases with standard credit cards, you might want to consider applying for cash back credit cards because such cards reward you with cash back on every purchase you make! Further, in addition to cash back on all of your purchases, cash back credit cards offer you the opportunity to afford additional savings, in ways you might not have imagined possible.

Cash Back

The obvious benefit derived from having cash back credit cards is the money that consumers get back on every purchase. Frequently, credit card issuing companies will supply credit card users with approximately 5% cash back on certain purchases like those made at drug stores, supermarkets, and gas stations. Additionally, many credit card companies will give 1% cash back on all other purchases. Needless to say, if you use your credit card frequently, such benefits can add up quickly. Further, your accumulated savings can be used for just about anything, but you can really save if you follow the example provided below.

Savings

Due to the fact that you save 1 to 5 percent on many of your purchases made with cash back credit cards, you can find yourself saving quite a bit of money. Let’s take a look at the example provided below to analyze the possibilities.

If you spend $1000 at supermarkets, $200 at drug stores and $300 dollars at gas stations in three months time, you will have spent $1500. Now consider this:

$1500 x 5% = $75.00

Thus, you save $75.00 for every $1500 you spend with your cash back credit card! Now project such savings over one year’s time. For instance, if you spend approximately $1500 every three months at establishments that make you eligible to receive 5% back on your purchases you will have spent $6000.00 for the year. Now, consider the savings:

$6000 x 5% = $300.00

Making Your Savings Work for You

So, what can your savings do for you? Plenty! With the $300.00 you save, you can store it away for a rainy day or you can reward yourself for being so credit savvy and for saving yourself some money!

Inspect to see if the bank who is tending to give you a money loan is proficient. A merchant bank in Canton Ohio or so may have a total different actual rate of interest for a 30000 dollar credit loan then a moneylender in Blacksburg Virginia and that makes a large clear gap in your monthly costs. Credit Card Interest Rates

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — @ 1:02 pm

If you are concerned about the credit card interest rates you are being offered, or any other terms or conditions that you feel are unfair or less favourable than those to which you are entitled to, you may wish to familiarise yourself with the Fair Credit Reporting Act or FCRA as it is abbreviated. This law is primarily aimed at ensuring that people’s credit reports are kept accurate and up to date, as well as protecting your privacy in financial matters such as these. It is governed and enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, which, takes on the role of protecting consumers at a federal level.

Therefore if you feel that you are being cheated or there is something afoul with the credit card interest rates you are being offered, you may wish to get into contact with the Federal Trade Commission to see what exactly your rights are in this regard. You should always make a point of understanding and being up to date with these rights whenever you are negotiating for new credit, or an improvement in the terms of your existing credit, since such knowledge and information will improve your bargaining position and will help ensure that you are not taken advantage of by the big credit providers and banks that you will be dealing with.

With regard to your credit report, there is a free disclosure rule in the Accurate Credit Transactions Act that gives you a right to view your credit report for free. This right applies to the credit reports compiled by each of the three nation wide consumer credit reporting companies that operate on a national basis. There is a web site and phone number that you can use to get access to all three reports at the same time.

  • www.annualcreditreport.com is the website
  • 1-877-322-8228 is the phone number.
  • You may mail a request to Annual Credit Report Request Service, PO Box 105281, Atlanta, GA, 30348-5281.

The companies must provide you with a copy of your report, free of charge, at least every 12 months and you can then ensure that all of the information contained in it is accurate and up to date. You may then be able to use this information to protect your right to receive the best possible credit card interest rate offers that you are entitled to. Simply ensuring that your credit report is accurate and being aware of your rights can significantly improve your access to the best credit card interest rates on the market so make sure you keep on top of these issues if you are considering applying for new credit in the near future.
